For the fifth time, Israel bombed a Palestinian school sheltering displaced civilians, killing 18 Palestinians, six of whom were UNRWA staff members.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced that the strikes hit Al-Jaouni School in the Nuseirat camp, central Gaza, while Israeli shelling continued across the Strip, leaving even more casualties and injuries.
UNRWA stated on its website, “This is the highest number of deaths among our staff in a single incident. Among those killed were the shelter’s director and other staff helping displaced people.” They also shared that this school had been bombed five times since the war began, despite sheltering around 12,000 displaced people, mostly women and children.
Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal commented, “For the fifth time, Israel bombed the UNRWA Al-Jaouni School, killing 18 people, including two UNRWA staff, women, and children, while wounding more than 18 others, some critically.”
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time a so-called “safe” area has been bombed. Schools like Tel al-Zaatar School, Al-Fakhoura School, and Al-Tabi’in School, all UNRWA-affiliated, have also been hit by air and ground attacks, despite sheltering displaced Palestinians since the aggression began on October 7, 2020.
